13 is a zero

The movie starts off showing us 2 guys with guns pointed at each other's head...then a flashback. Vince (Sam Riley) needs money to pay for his dad in the hospital, who looks like he has been hit by a truck. While working as an electrician in the home of a heroin addict, he discovers the addict has an envelope with instructions that will get him money fast. Once the addict dies , Vince steals said envelope and follows the instructions. He ends up as the unwilling participant in a game of Russian roulette. Rich people bet on the outcome and somehow in this game of chance, players are assigned different odds. There is another flashback so we get a peek at Mickey O'Rourke's character. I didn't feel connected to any of the players. The game was stupid and the action of close up head shots was lame. Maybe if they would of had a female player or two. A party for the players between rounds. A relationship building between two lovers who must shoot each other. There was none of this, just boring old unshaven men with guns pointed at the back of each other's head. I couldn't feel any drama or intensity.

F-bomb, no sex, no nudity.

Simple but tense story, good in places but poor in others

Desperate to find a way to pay for his father's ever-increasing medical bills, the young and naive protagonist stumbles across a way that just might achieve that.

The involved set-up makes for a slow start. The next sequence gives an intriguing mystery. The sequence following this provides the guts of the film. Its fish-out-of-water nature exacerbates the tension; a piece of undiluted tension.

After this you get the feeling the film-makers run out of ideas and enthusiasm. The story-line is flat and goes downhill. The ending looks like the makers just wanted to wrap the production up and move onto other things.

This is a pity, because you feel that given more effort the makers could have produced, given the originality of its premise, quite a polished film.

Isn't enough to make it all good

I didn't know this was a remake or lets call it an Americanisation from the same Director, for the looks of it, the black and white original version looks to be more thrilling in its appearance. This is a Tense film from start to finish, what makes this film work is the style, it is gloomy and have a very dark setting, in general the film is brutal or savage, it is a very dark thriller with suspense and almost nail-biting moments.

I think for a film like this, it should have been even more dark, we have to have a somewhat American happy ending, and the Russian roulette scenes should also have been more raw, gloomy and maybe gory. It doesn't really work, there are some great scenes and moments, but it isn't enough to make it all good.
