Adapted from William Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew," 10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron, new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael, who will become his best friend. During his tour is when Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn't allowed to date. And neither is her "shrew" sister, Katarina, a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca's father alters his house rule: now, Bianca can date... as long as Kat has a date, too. Now, in order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner, tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat. His choice: Patrick Verona, a bad-boy with a mysterious reputation--some say he ate a live duck once, ...

I first watched this movie in 9th grade and I am now a sophomore in college. I have lost track of how many times I've seen this movie, and I have yet to grow tired of it. It is one of those few movies that can bring you the same amount of joy it did the first time you watched it even if you're watching it for the 100th time. One of my favorite comments (that I take as a compliment) anyone has ever given me is that I remind them of Kat Stratford! ("Likes: Thai food, feminist prose and angry girl music of the Indie Rock persuasion"). Heath Ledger is such a rare, charismatic star who left this world way too soon! Even when you're supposed to hate his character, how can you?! It is not just a cliche teen movie, and I would (and have) recommended this movie to so many people.

Very Good Romantic Comedy

Shakespeare's "The Taming Of The Shrew" is the basis for "10 Things I Hate About You," a fun, sweet, romantic-comedy that has a surprising amount of substance. Julia Stiles plays the "shrew," a highly intelligent teen who is fiercely independent and speaks her mind at all times. So what's the problem? Well, her sister is a social butterfly who wants to date but isn't allowed to by the father...unless Stiles also dates. The father's idea is that Stiles will never date, and so the other daughter won't either, and neither of them will do any crazy, sexual things with boys.

But two young men - one of whom is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt - desperately want to date Stiles' sister; and so both of them work up a scheme to have a fearless, bad boy in their school (played by Heath Ledger) to ask out Stiles. Typical of a rom-com, the lead romantic couple "meet cute," they start to really like each other, then a monkey wrench gets tossed into the situation that can potentially mess everything up.

My most memorable, movie moment of "10 Things I Hate About You" is the scene when Stiles gets up in front of her English class and reads a poem that is basically a list of things she hates about Ledger. It was the most poignant part of the movie as well as showing the wonderful talent of Stiles.

What sets "10 Things I Hate About You" apart from the typical, teen rom-com are: solid, three-dimensional characters of Ledger, Stiles and Gordon-Levitt; very clever dialogue dished out by Stiles; the two lead characters are very likeable; and the great chemistry between Stiles and Ledger. It took me almost 20 years to finally see this movie, and now I know why it is so popular.

A very good movie

Kat and Bianca are two very different sisters. Although both good looking, they are unable to get on a date, partly because of their very strict father, and partly because of Kat's attitude in relation to other people. Thus, when a playboy sets his mind on Bianca, he is inspired to pay someone to take her sister on a date, in order to take Bianca to the prom.

Although simplistic as a main idea, this movie proves that you can make a really good movie with an apparently simple plot, without having some bombastic ideas. One leads to another and so, two separate love stories emerge, proving what the partners are willing to do to get the one he or she loves, without thinking about consequences.

It's an enjoyable movie, romantic and sometimes emotional, even funny at times, which puts a smile on your face if you want it to. It isn't groundbreaking or anything, especially considering it's, above all, a teen movie, but it's a very good watch. Enjoy!
